7 Must Haves for Stenciling
Are you interested in undertaking a stenciling project? These 7 Must Haves for Stenciling will help make your stencil project go so much smoother. I’m sharing my list of the 7 Must Haves for Stenciling below.
1. Stencil Brush
One of the first things you need to stencil is a stencil brush. It doesn’t need to be crazy expensive but it should be a good quality brush that does the job well.

2. Paint

Another thing you need for stenciling is paint. I recommend using an acrylic or latex paint, both are water based. I also recommend using a low sheen paint like matte, eggshell or satin. Avoid stenciling with a semi gloss or gloss paint. Also avoid stenciling onto a high gloss surface such as a semi gloss or gloss wall or piece of furniture or any other super smooth surface.
3. Repositioning Stencil Adhesive Spray
This repositioning stencil adhesive spray was a game changer for me. I love using this particular adhesive spray. It keeps the stencil in place and it really helps in reducing bleed through on the stencil. And for me it helps me to stencil faster knowing the stencil isn’t moving and that the bleed through will be almost impossible.

4. Stencil

I think this is a given but you will need a stencil to be able to stencil. You can cut your own stencil using any of the stencil cut files in my resource library or shop, or you can purchase a pre-cut stencil at any craft store or at several online stencil shops.
5. Stencil Unloading Surface
When stenciling you load your brush with a little bit of paint and then you unload as much of that paint as you can while still keep a little on the stencil brush. It’s a bit of a balancing act. I like to have a scrap piece of wood or cardboard nearby while I’m stenciling to unload the paint onto so my stencil brush is as “dry” as possible to reduce bleed through possibility.

6. Object to Stencil

This might be pretty obvious too but you will need an object on which to stencil. Whether it’s a wall, piece of furniture, clothing or a wooden sign make sure your surface is clean and ready to be stenciled onto.
7. Tape
Painter’s tape or masking tape is helpful to have around when stenciling. I like putting the tape around the edges of the stencil so I don’t accidentally stencil over the edges of the stencil and then have spill over stencil paint on the project.
