1. Use Very Little Paint
When stenciling you load your brush with a little bit of paint and then you unload the brush onto a blank surface like a piece of wood or cardboard before you actually stencil. When unloading your brush make sure that it has very little paint on it before stenciling on your project.
2. Use Repositioning Stencil Adhesive Spray
Using repositioning stencil adhesive spray was a complete game changer for me and I highly recommend using this on stencil projects. It even works to keep stencils on fabric. It keeps bleed through possibilities incredibly low. It keeps the stencil in place so you don’t have to worry about lining the stencil back up if it moves. In my own stenciling projects having the bleed through possibility kept at a super low chance and knowing the stencil isn’t going to slip out of place just helps me to work a little bit faster when stenciling. I highly recommend this adhesive spray.
3. Keep painter’s tape nearby
You might be wondering why I would need painter’s tape if the stencil is being held in place by the adhesive spray. I use the painter’s tape near the edge of the stencil where the brush could go over the edge of the stencil and paint parts of the surface that I didn’t want painted. So I use the tape to block the sides off where there could be a paint spill over.
4. Use a Stencil Brush
Stencil brushes are designed for stenciling which is why I highly recommend a good quality stencil brush.
5. Have a Pouncing Pad Near
When stenciling you have to load your stencil brush with a little bit of paint and then unload the paint until there’s even less paint on your stencil brush. I like to have a designated surface like a piece of scrap wood or cardboard nearby on which to pounce excess paint off the stencil brush until I’m confident that very little paint remains on the brush before moving onto the surface I’m actually going to stencil on.
6. Keep Stencils Cleaned
Keeping stencils clean after using them a few times over just ensures that the stencil design is kept crisp and clean for future projects.
7. Use Water Based Paint
When stenciling be sure to use water based paints like acrylic and latex paints. Also I recommend using a low sheen paint like matte, eggshell, or satin.
8. Be Patient
Stenciling projects tend to take more time than broad stroke painting projects so just be patient and know that the extra time you spend on stenciling will be worth it. There’s nothing like taking the stencil off your project and revealing a beautiful design that makes you go “Wow!”
